ChatGPT Ads for service businesses: the operator's guide
Ads inside ChatGPT are real, self-serve, and young. What's verified as of August 2026, what a test costs, and how we'd measure yours to booked jobs.

What ChatGPT Ads actually are
ChatGPT Ads are sponsored placements that appear below ChatGPT's responses — clearly labeled, visually separate from the answer itself, and bought through OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager on cost-per-click or cost-per-impression pricing. There is no keyword bidding anywhere in the system: you supply the ad, the landing page, and context signals, and OpenAI's matching engine decides which conversations your ad belongs under.
The channel is young but real. OpenAI began showing ads to U.S. users in February 2026; as of August 2026 the platform is open to advertisers in nine countries with 31 European markets announced, and there is no minimum spend. We manage campaigns inside it today — this guide is the operator's view, and the full service picture lives on our ChatGPT Ads page.
Why a service business should care
Because the buying conversation moved. A homeowner used to type "water heater replacement cost" into Google; a growing share now ask ChatGPT the whole question — budget, symptoms, timeline, "who should I call?" — and act on the answer they get back. That moment is reachable two ways, and they compound: earning a mention inside the answer is organic work — that is AEO — while the sponsored slot below the answer is the part you can simply buy. The ad is guaranteed presence; the citation is earned presence. Businesses running both own the conversation twice.
Who sees the ads — and who never will
Ads show to adults 18+ on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans, logged in or logged out. Paid tiers — Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu — never see ads. OpenAI also keeps ads out of sensitive territory (personal health, mental health, politics) and out of Temporary Chats. With roughly a billion weekly active users on the platform, the ad-eligible audience is enormous even after those exclusions — but if your vertical lives inside the sensitive categories, this channel is not open to you yet, and anyone selling you otherwise is guessing.
How matching works without keywords
OpenAI's system reads the context of a conversation and matches ads against four things you control: your ad creative, your landing page, ad-group "context hints" describing where you belong, and your audience and location settings. Winning placements go through a relevance-weighted second-price auction — relevance is not a quality-score garnish here, it is most of the algorithm. That makes your landing page a targeting input, not just a destination: a crawlable, specific page about emergency drain service is how the system learns you belong under emergency drain conversations.
What you can and cannot target, as of August 2026:
| You get | There is no |
|---|---|
| Custom audiences — your customer and prospect lists, included or excluded | Keyword bidding |
| Geography — country everywhere; state, DMA, and zip in the U.S. | Demographic targeting |
| Platform — iOS, Android, web | Interest categories |
| Ad-group context hints describing relevant conversations | Any way to buy your way into the answer itself |
What it costs, as of August 2026
There is no minimum spend — you set budgets and bids. OpenAI's own guidance suggests starting CPC bids of $3–5. For a service business we typically recommend a governed test of roughly $2,000–$3,000 a month in media: enough signal to judge lead quality inside 60–90 days without raiding the budget of channels that already work.
Then run the same backward math you would run anywhere: what a booked job is worth, what you can afford to pay for one, and what that makes a click worth to you. The budget procedure we use for Google Ads transfers to this channel line for line — only the traffic source changes.
Tracking it to booked jobs
Measurement is the part most early adopters skip, and it is the part that makes the test mean anything. OpenAI provides a Pixel and a Conversions API for what happens after the click, UTM parameters persist so GA4 and your CRM attribute the traffic normally, and third-party measurement integrations exist. We wire all of it before the first dollar of spend, then carry measurement past the click — lead scoring, booked-appointment tracking, revenue reporting — because cost per qualified lead, not clicks, is the grade.
Where it fits next to Google and Meta
It does not replace anything — and on a channel this new, that honesty matters. Google Ads still delivers the overwhelming majority of referral clicks on the web and remains the workhorse for capturing existing demand. The smart structure is additive: keep Google's winners fully funded, run the ChatGPT test on incremental budget, measure both to qualified cost per lead, and scale whichever earns it. We will not quote you a ChatGPT Ads benchmark, because honest ones do not exist yet — anyone promising a specific ROAS on this channel is reading tea leaves. What exists is a disciplined way to find YOUR number.
The window, honestly
Most of what has been published about this channel is generated guesswork — high-volume content written before its authors ever ran a campaign. Every platform fact in this guide is verified against OpenAI's documentation and stamped August 2026, and we re-verify on a schedule because young platforms move. The early-mover case is the same one we made for answer-engine visibility: the businesses that build the structure now — page, tracking, tested creative — compound while competitors wait for the channel to feel safe. By then the auction will price the safety in.

Frequently asked questions
Can my business run ads on ChatGPT today?
If you operate in one of the nine open countries (the U.S. included) and outside OpenAI's excluded sensitive categories, yes — the Ads Manager is self-serve with no minimum spend, as of August 2026. Eligibility and markets are expanding; verify current availability before planning a launch.
How much should a service business spend on a ChatGPT Ads test?
Our guidance is a governed test of roughly $2,000–$3,000 a month in media for 60–90 days — funded incrementally, not carved out of Google campaigns that already book jobs. OpenAI suggests starting CPC bids of $3–5. Judge the test on qualified cost per lead against your existing channel baselines, not on impressions.
Do ChatGPT Ads change what ChatGPT says about my business?
No. OpenAI is explicit that ads run on separate systems from the chat model, and advertisers cannot shape, rank, or alter responses. Being mentioned inside the answer itself is organic AI-search work — a different discipline that pairs with the paid slot rather than replacing it.
Will ChatGPT Ads replace my Google Ads?
No — and we manage both, so we have no reason to flatter either. Google remains the dominant source of referral traffic and captured demand. Treat ChatGPT Ads as an additive test on the emerging conversational moment, funded and measured separately, scaled only if it earns its place.
How do I know if the test worked?
Decide the scoreboard before launch: qualified cost per lead, measured through the OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API into your CRM, compared against your Google and Meta baselines over 60–90 days. If the channel books jobs at a competitive cost, scale it; if it does not, you have a dated, evidenced answer instead of a lingering "should we be on ChatGPT?" question.
