The complaint we hear most, decoded

"Google Ads works, but the leads are junk" is the most common complaint in paid search — and it is almost never the platform. Google sells access to intent; what arrives at your phone is shaped by five decisions in your own account and funnel. We check them in this order on every account we audit, because the order matches how often each one turns out to be the culprit.

The five causes, in diagnostic order

Work down the list; most "junk lead" accounts fail on two or three at once:

  • 1. You optimized for the wrong event: if the account's conversion is a form fill or a 10-second call, the algorithm dutifully finds people who fill forms and hang up. Feed it what a customer actually looks like — booked jobs imported back as offline conversions — and lead quality follows the target within weeks. This is cause #1 in well over half the accounts we inherit.
  • 2. The search terms tell on you: broad match without negative discipline buys "free," "DIY," "how to," job-seekers, and other-city traffic all day. The fix is a ritual, not a setting: a weekly search-terms review, a growing negative list, and match types tightened around what converts.
  • 3. The page qualifies nobody: a homepage with a generic form invites everyone and commits no one. A message-matched landing page with one qualifying question filters the tire-kickers before they cost your dispatcher a call — same clicks, different phone.
  • 4. Geography is set to hope: overdrawn radiuses and "presence or interest" settings buy leads you will never service. Tighten to where trucks actually roll, split campaigns by area, and let regional cost-per-job set each budget — the county split in our moving case study came from exactly this diagnosis.
  • 5. The leads were fine — they went stale: most customers go with the first responder, so a good lead answered in four hours performs like a bad one. Before blaming the account, check the answer rate and speed. This one is free to fix and routinely mislabeled as a quality problem.

How to run the diagnosis this week

Pull three reports: conversion actions (what is the account actually optimizing toward?), the last 30 days of search terms (read every query that spent more than a few dollars), and call outcomes by response time. Those three artifacts identify the guilty causes in under an hour — and they are the first hour of our free audit if you would rather we read them with you.

What almost never fixes bad leads: raising the budget. More spend on a mis-aimed account buys more of the same leads, faster — the budget math only works after the aim is right.

Frequently asked questions

Are Google Ads leads just worse than referrals?

They are colder than referrals — everyone's are — but "worse" usually means one of the five causes above is active. A properly aimed search campaign delivers people with the problem, in your area, right now; a referral delivers trust you have to earn with strangers. Different funnels, and the comparison only matters at the level of cost per booked job.

How do I audit my search terms?

In Google Ads, open the search-terms report for the last 30 days, sort by spend, and read every query that cost real money. Mark each one buyer / browser / never — negatives come from the "never" column, match-type tightening from the "browser" column. Twenty minutes a week keeps the account honest.

Should I pause the campaign while lead quality is bad?

Pause the bleeding, not the account: cut broad-match experiments and off-area targeting immediately, keep the proven exact-match core running, and fix the conversion target before restoring spend. A full pause resets learning and turns a two-week fix into a two-month one.

How fast does lead quality improve after the fixes?

Negative keywords and geography changes show up in days. Conversion-target changes — teaching the algorithm what a booked job is — take two to four weeks of data to steer by. If nothing has moved after 30 days with tracking verified, the diagnosis missed; run the list again.
