Local SEO for landscapers is the work of ranking a landscaping business in Google's Map Pack and local organic results, where a current and genuinely local photo set does unusual work — landscaping is the one local category where customers can judge the product before buying, and where the profile that shows real neighbourhood work wins clicks that ranking position alone does not earn.
The Keys To Local SEO
Does Google understand which services you sell — weekly maintenance, design and build, irrigation, hardscaping, tree work? They are separate searches with completely different job values.
Are you relevant to the area the customer is searching from? Landscaping is bought by neighbourhood, and neighbourhood is also how your routes make money, so the two line up unusually well.
Does your business have the reviews, photos and authority Google trusts enough to recommend? Here the photo set carries real weight — this is the trade where people look before they call.
Why local SEO matters here
A homeowner choosing a plumber is buying a repair they will never look at. A homeowner choosing a landscaper is buying something they will look at every day for years, and they know it — so they behave completely differently. They open the photos before they read a word.
Google knows this too, and surfaces images prominently on landscaping listings. Which means the highest-return work in this channel is something no other trade would prioritise: photographing real jobs in real neighborhoods, consistently, and putting them where both the customer and the algorithm can see them.
Why The Map Pack Matters
Of local-search clicks go to the Google Map Pack. BrightLocal, 2026
Of near-me mobile searches lead to a visit within 24 hours. WiserReview / OnTheMap, 2026
Of consumers search online for nearby businesses. WiserReview, 2026

The Framework
Six things decide whether a landscaping company gets the walk-through. This is the whole list — use it to judge us, or to judge the agency you are already paying.
In every other trade the photos are supporting evidence. Here they are the sale: a homeowner choosing between three landscapers is comparing gardens, and they decide in the gallery before they ever read a word. Shoot properly, shoot recently, and shoot the work you want more of.
Where it goes wrong: Twelve phone photos of a mower on a verge. It is the single most common reason a well-ranked landscaping profile still loses the call to the company below it.
Design, construction and maintenance are different companies to Google and different purchases to a homeowner. A profile that blurs them competes for searches it cannot win and misses the ones it should own.
Where it goes wrong: Listing everything in the hope of catching everything. It caps relevance for all three and usually leaves you ranking for the cheapest of the three.
“landscape design near me”, “retaining wall builder [suburb]”, “sod installation cost” — searches from someone standing in a garden they have decided to change. Not “landscaping”, which is mostly people looking for a mow.
Where it goes wrong: Optimising for maintenance keywords because they have the volume, then wondering why the enquiries are all fortnightly mowing at the bottom of your price list.
You earn radius rather than buy it. A page for a suburb should carry its soil, its slope, its block sizes and the work those conditions demand — with photographs of jobs you did there, which is the proof no competitor can copy.
Where it goes wrong: Twelve pages identical apart from the town name is the most common deliverable in this trade and the one Google most reliably declines to rank.
Satisfaction in this trade peaks on the day, then the novelty fades. Tie the ask to handover, and prompt for a photo — a review with an image attached does the work of a review and a portfolio entry at once.
Where it goes wrong: Recency is weighted, so fifteen reviews from the last six months typically outrank forty from two years ago — and asking a month later, once the client has moved on, is how a busy landscaper ends up with almost none.
The searches that fund your spring happen in late winter, and a page has to be indexed and ranking before they arrive. The quiet months are not downtime; they are when the visibility for the busy months is bought.
Where it goes wrong: Writing the spring content in spring. Indexing and ranking take longer than the season lasts, so the work lands a year late every time until somebody moves the calendar.
Two honest caveats. Distance from the searcher is a ranking input you cannot move, so none of this makes one yard rank citywide — it widens the radius, it does not delete it. And none of it replaces paid at the front of the season: when everyone books in the same six weeks, the fastest traffic is still bought.
AI Search
When customers ask ChatGPT instead of Google, a different discipline decides who gets named: Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — the practice behind our AEO service. Here’s how it works — and why it stands on local SEO.
Someone asks AI
“Who’s the best plumber near me?” goes to ChatGPT or an AI Overview instead of a results page.
The engine retrieves
It doesn’t guess — it reads the search index, your Google Business Profile, citations, and reviews. The exact layer local SEO builds.
It answers with 2–3 names
No page one, no ads — and it recommends just 1.2% of local businesses (SOCi, 2026). Cited businesses get the call.
How AEO actually works
Getting named by an answer engine isn’t a different marketing budget — it’s the same local SEO assets, structured so a machine can read them. Here are the five things that decide whether you get quoted, shortest first.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your business’s information — your site, schema, profiles, and reputation — so AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews can retrieve it, verify it, and cite you in their answers.
It matters because answers are replacing result pages: when an AI Overview appears, clicks on results fall from 15% to 8% and a quarter of sessions end right at the answer (Pew Research, 2025). Increasingly, the recommendation is the visit.
AI retrieves before it answers. Engines pull from search indexes, Maps data, and citations — if SEO hasn’t put you there, there’s nothing for AI to find.
AI trusts SEO’s signals. Complete profiles, consistent NAP, LocalBusiness schema, steady reviews — the foundation Google ranks is what AI verifies against.
AI compresses page one into two or three names. SEO gets you into the retrieval pool; AEO structure is what gets you quoted.
Retrieval happens by passage, not by page. A service page that buries “we replace water heaters in Sherman Oaks” in paragraph six gives an engine nothing clean to lift.
Answer first, elaborate second. Open each section with the direct answer. That block is what gets cited; everything after it is context for the human reading.
Structure everything. LocalBusiness and Service schema, honest headings, FAQ markup — what turns a page of prose into units a machine can address one at a time.
One question per block. If a passage needs the paragraph above it to make sense, it cannot be quoted alone — and it will not be chosen.
What gets retrieved
Water Heater Repair — Sherman Oaks
Founded in 2009, our family-owned team has proudly served the San Fernando Valley with a commitment to quality workmanship and…
We replace and repair water heaters across Sherman Oaks, usually same-day, with 24-hour emergency callout.
Our technicians are background-checked and carry full liability cover…
One self-contained sentence, high on the page. That is the unit an answer engine can quote.
Coverage is what reads as expertise. A page per service and a page per area gives the engine more to retrieve and more reason to treat you as the local authority on that job.
Answer the next question too. Whoever asks who repairs a water heater asks what it costs next. Cover that fan-out and you stay the source across the whole thread.
Connect it on purpose. Hubs and spokes, linked through a real taxonomy, so the pages read as one body of work rather than scattered posts sharing a domain.
Write for meaning, not for keywords. Retrieval matches on semantics. Say it plainly, in the words a customer would use, and the machine has less to guess at.
What a cluster looks like
Water heaters — hub
Services and service areas under one subject — depth the engine can read as expertise.
The local kind: your details, identical everywhere. Directory listings carrying the same name, address and phone. Only 68% of what AI shows currently matches the business’s own Google profile (SOCi, 2026).
The AI kind: being the name that gets quoted. Models synthesise from sources they have seen referenced elsewhere. Appearing where your market is covered makes you a safer name to return.
Reviews are read, not counted. Engines read what reviewers wrote. “Came out at 11pm for a burst pipe” is retrievable evidence; a bare five-star average is not.
Mentions now rival links. An unlinked mention in local press or a community roundup carries weight in retrieval. Digital PR stopped being optional for local businesses.
What AI verifies against
One stale listing is one wrong number an answer engine can hand a customer.
Platforms
45% of consumers already use ChatGPT or other AI tools to discover local businesses.
BrightLocal, 2026
An AI-search visitor is worth 4.4× a traditional organic visitor — fewer clicks, far higher intent.
Semrush, 2026
Only 68% of business contact details shown in ChatGPT and Perplexity actually match the business’s Google Profile — the rest are out of sync, sending customers to the wrong number, the wrong hours, or to a competitor.
SOCi Local Visibility Index, 2026
Strong AEO stands on strong SEO. The foundation that wins you the map — profile, citations, schema, reviews — is the same data AI reads when it recommends you. Build it once, get found on both.
The work
There is no budget to raise in this channel, only work to sequence — and in landscaping the sequence has to finish before the season turns. Here is what we do, in order, with an honest note on timing.
Current photos of real local jobs, the services you actually sell, and a call button. In this trade the photo set is the highest-return field on the whole profile, and it is usually stock imagery or three pictures from 2022.
Aim for a steady trickle rather than one upload. Recent, real, and recognisably local outperforms a large archive of anonymous greenery.
Homeowners choose the nearby company they trust, and Google recommends the one it trusts. Landscaping has more asking moments than almost any trade — you are on the property every week.
Collect through autumn cleanups and winter work. Reviews gathered in November are what rank you in March, when the maintenance decisions are actually made.
You know which streets you want more work on, because they are the ones your trucks already visit. These are the pages that let you rank there rather than only near your yard.
Write about the actual area — the lot sizes, the soil, the HOA rules, what those gardens actually need. A template with the suburb name swapped is the deliverable Google most reliably ignores.
If your name, address and phone disagree across directories, Google trusts all of them a little less — and trust is what decides whether it puts you in front of a homeowner at all.
Usually a one-time cleanup with light maintenance. Seasonal businesses often have stale listings from a previous name or a home address, which is worth catching once.
Site speed, image compression, crawlability, the links between services and areas. On its own it books nobody a job; without it, everything above works at a fraction of its value.
Image weight matters more in this trade than any other, because a portfolio-heavy site is the easiest kind to make slow — and slow pages lose exactly the people who came to look at pictures.
The Timeline
Slower than you want and faster than it looks, in that order — and in this trade the season decides whether the timing helps you or hurts you. Here is the curve we describe on the first call.
Weeks 1–4
The audit grid, the profile rebuild, the photography brief, the citation cleanup. Rankings will look much as they did — but this is the month the gallery usually gets replaced, which changes the click rate before it changes the ranking.
Weeks 6–12
You start appearing for searches you were simply not entered for. Profile actions move before calls do — and in this trade photo views are the leading indicator, because that is where the decision happens.
Months 4–7
Area and service pages are indexed and ranking and review velocity has compounded. Start in autumn and this lands in spring; start in spring and it lands after the season, which is the single biggest argument for signing in the quiet months.
Month 12 onward
Effective cost per enquiry typically lands at its lowest of any channel we run, and the portfolio you built along the way keeps ranking whether or not you keep paying us.
Observed ranges across our landscaping Local SEO accounts, not published research. Metro competitiveness, the state of your existing photography, and where in the season you start will move all four windows.
What it costs
Landscaping Local SEO has an awkward shape: the work has to happen when the phone is quietest and the budget feels least justifiable. Here is the arithmetic we run on the first call, with your numbers rather than these.
| Monthly retainer | $1,000–$2,500 | Single-location landscaping business. Design-build and wide territories sit higher, because the page and photo work multiplies. |
|---|---|---|
| Effective cost per call, spring | $15–$45 | Retainer divided by attributed calls once the curve has matured and demand has arrived. |
| One-off job vs maintenance contract | $450 vs $2,400/yr | The number that decides whether this channel is cheap. Both are one call in your log, and they are not worth the same. |
| What you keep if you stop | Most of it | Profile, photos, pages, reviews and citations remain yours and keep ranking, decaying slowly rather than switching off. |
These are our observed ranges across landscaping Local SEO accounts, not published research — season length, property values, service mix and how much of the foundation is already broken will move all of them. The row worth arguing about internally is the second-to-last: it is the difference between measuring calls and measuring the book.
The Programme
Six phases between where you rank today and a Map Pack position that is already working when spring arrives. No phase is skippable — each one feeds the next.
AdFury AI maps exactly where you rank in the Map Pack and local organic for your money keywords, at every point across your real service area — and cross-checks whether your profile and listings are accurate everywhere customers (and AI) look. Your strategist starts from a grid, not a hunch.
You get:A baseline grid showing where you rank, where you’re invisible, and who’s beating you.
We complete and optimize your profile end to end — categories, services, attributes, photos, posts, Q&A — the highest-leverage, most-skipped work in local SEO. After launch, AdFury AI keeps watch, flagging missing fields, category drift, and the changes Google makes silently.
You get:A fully optimized profile built to earn clicks, calls, and direction requests.
We make your Name, Address, and Phone identical across every directory and platform that feeds Google and AI. AdFury AI then monitors those listings continuously and flags the moment one drifts out of sync — the quiet gaps that suppress rankings and misinform AI answers.
You get:Clean, consistent listings everywhere that matters.
We build genuine service and location pages and tune your site’s local relevance — the top driver of local organic visibility. AdFury AI tracks which pages are winning their keywords, where rankings decay, and which nearby areas are gaps worth building next.
You get:Pages engineered to rank for the places and services you actually serve.
We build a steady, ethical review engine and earn local links and citations that grow your prominence over time — while AdFury AI tracks review velocity, response times, and your competitors’ reputation moves, so authority compounds instead of plateauing.
You get:Rising review velocity and authority that compounds.
AdFury AI watches your rankings around the clock — Map Pack movement, calls, direction requests, review velocity — and surfaces the signals that matter. The judgment calls stay human: your strategist turns that intelligence into next moves, not a monthly PDF.
You get:A living dashboard tied to real customer actions, not vanity metrics.
The Proof
Four cities, four trades, one program. Red pins are Map Pack positions nobody scrolls to; green stars are the top three. Drag the divider on any map to compare — illustrative rank grids, and your free audit builds the real one for your city.

Why us
We've managed $30M+ in ad spend, and landscaping is the one local category where the customer judges the work before calling — so we treat the portfolio as ranking work.
This is the field customers tap first and the one usually holding stock greenery or three pictures from two years ago. A steady trickle of real local jobs outperforms a bulk archive.
Maintenance clients are chosen in a three-week window as the season turns. The reviews and pages that win them are built in November, which is exactly when most companies pause.
Lot sizes, soil, HOA rules, what those gardens actually need. Landscaping gives you real material, and a template with the suburb swapped wastes it.
We don't run Local SEO for your competitor across town. One client per trade per service area, because Map Pack position is zero-sum.
Every account runs the same five-stage loop — Discover, Design, Deploy, Decode, Dominate — so nothing depends on guesswork or heroics.

FAQ
Straight answers about Local SEO for a landscaping business — tight enough for AI to lift verbatim.
They affect what happens after the ranking, which matters just as much. Landscaping is the one local category where customers judge the product before calling, and Google surfaces images prominently on those listings — so a current, real, recognisably local photo set wins clicks that position alone did not earn.
Most single-location companies run $1,000–$2,500/month. By spring the effective cost per attributed call typically lands between $15 and $45. The more important number is what the call is worth: a one-off job averages around $450, a maintenance contract $2,400 a year.
Autumn or winter. Meaningful call volume takes 4–7 months and maintenance clients are chosen in a roughly three-week window as the season turns, so work started in March arrives at the season half done. This is the trade where the start month decides the year.
Yes, and it is the hardest month to justify and the most important. Reviews and content built in November are what rank you in March. Going dark means arriving at the season with a stale profile against competitors who never stopped.
Real jobs, recently, in recognisable local settings — not stock greenery and not a large archive of anonymous lawns. A steady trickle outperforms one bulk upload, and houses that look like the searcher's house do more work than your most impressive project.
When they are about the area, yes — and this trade gives you real material: lot sizes, soil, HOA rules, what those particular gardens need. Twelve pages identical apart from the suburb name is the most common deliverable in landscaping and the one Google most reliably declines to rank.
Offer the contract at completion, on site, every time. Local SEO produces the enquiry; whether it becomes an annuity is decided by whether anyone asks. That single habit is what separates a $450 channel from a $2,400 one.
You are on the property weekly, which gives you more asking moments than almost any trade — and almost nobody uses them. Collect through the autumn and winter especially, because recency is weighted and those are the reviews that rank you in spring.
For the recommendation question, yes — profile, photos, local content and reviews all feed the answer when someone asks an assistant to recommend a landscaper nearby. What Local SEO does not reach is the seasonal and diagnostic layer, where assistants currently answer local questions with national averages that are wrong for your climate. Correcting those is a separate discipline, covered on our AEO page for landscapers.
Most of it survives. The profile, the photos, the neighborhood pages, the reviews and the citations belong to your business and keep ranking, decaying slowly rather than switching off.
Never in the same service area. Map Pack position is zero-sum — there are three slots — so two clients in one market would be working directly against each other.
It's yours. The profile, the pages, the photos, the reviews, the citations and the documentation stay with your business — we build it, we never hold it.
