LSA / Local SEO
How LSA ranking actually works (and the lever most businesses ignore)
You cannot pick keywords and you cannot simply outbid your way up. What moves Local Services Ads ranking — documented inputs plus what we observe.

The ranking you cannot keyword your way into
Local Services Ads have no keywords to bid on and no ad copy to test, which leaves owners staring at a ranking they cannot see the controls for. The controls exist — Google documents several and the rest show up clearly across managed accounts. Ranked by how much they move in practice: responsiveness, reviews, proximity, and budget headroom, in roughly that order.
The inputs, and who actually controls them
What decides which verified businesses show, as of August 2026:
- Answer rate and responsiveness: the lever most businesses ignore and the one we watch first. Missed calls and slow message replies visibly depress impression share in our accounts — Google is deciding whether sending you a customer ends well, and an unanswered ring says no.
- Review count, rating, and recency: the badge gets you in the auction; reviews decide your seat — we watched a mover's 4.0 → 4.3 move unlock placements directly, and the full mechanism is here. A steady drip beats a burst, and profiles syncing from a well-run Business Profile inherit its review equity.
- Proximity and service area: you rank where you plausibly serve. Overdrawn service areas dilute rather than expand — the system learns where you actually take jobs.
- Budget and bid headroom: a capped budget takes you out of auctions late in the period, which reads as disappearing to anyone tracking rank. Bids matter, but they gate entry rather than buy the top — we have never seen spend rescue a poor answer rate.
- Verification and complaint hygiene: lapsed documents pause you outright, and dispute-heavy behavior in either direction draws scrutiny. Boring, decisive.
Answer rate just became a billing factor too
The reason to fix responsiveness this quarter rather than eventually: the October 1, 2026 charge-policy changes make missed calls chargeable after a 20-second hold, and follow-up calls billable where the first was not. The same behavior that suppressed your ranking now also raises your bill — one fix, two paybacks. Shorten the phone tree, staff the listed hours, and put call tracking on the line so every ring has a timestamp and an outcome.
What the migration changes
As LSAs move inside Google Ads on Performance Max infrastructure, two ranking-adjacent things shift: bidding collapses into a campaign-level Target CPA (algorithmic, less hand-steering), and your profile syncs directly from your Business Profile — name, hours, categories, service areas. Profile hygiene stops being a local-SEO nicety and becomes ad infrastructure. The inputs above all survive the move; the interface for pulling them just changes.
Frequently asked questions
How does Google decide LSA ranking?
A mix Google documents in part: proximity to the searcher, review count and rating, responsiveness to calls and messages, business hours, and account standing — with budget and bids gating auction entry. In our accounts, responsiveness and review velocity are the two inputs that visibly move rank when they change.
Can I pay my way to the top of Local Services Ads?
Not reliably. Budget keeps you in auctions and bids matter at the margin, but we have never seen spend compensate for a poor answer rate or a thin review base. The businesses that hold the top spots answer fast, review steadily, and stay verified — then fund it.
Why did my LSA leads suddenly drop?
Check in order: missed-call streaks or slow message replies (the quiet killer), a capped budget exhausting early, lapsed verification documents pausing the account, and seasonal auction pressure. In our experience the first one explains more sudden drops than the other three combined.
Do my Google Business Profile reviews affect LSA ranking?
Yes — the profiles are linked, and with the migration into Google Ads they sync directly: name, hours, categories, service areas, and review equity. Running the Business Profile well is now part of running LSAs well, not a separate discipline.
